The Monstrous & The Divine: 1 Month Submissions Roundup!

And here we are with another post on the Divine Blog. I’m your host, Nicole Field… :D

Seriously though, we are very grateful for the number of submissions already received, as well as feeling blessed at the number of people from all corners of the world who have trusted us with reading their stories.

As of the beginning of the weekend, that amount is hovering at around 55 subs and it’s at this point that I would like to offer a few stats:

  • Of our submissions, we are currently at 20 from the Greek pantheon exclusively

  • That is a percentage of 37% out of all current submissions. Several of these are quite strong. Yet, as it says in our FAQ, we can only print one or two of a particular mythology to leave room for variety, and if 50-60% of the stories we get are in the Greek/Roman pantheon, that means your chances of acceptance are much lower, leaving the odds not hugely in your favour!

  • Coming into the beginning of the third week of submissions, we had already received 6 pieces for Medusa (or other gorgons) in particular

  • Out of these, 2 submissions from two different authors shared the same title!

  • We have also, from the same number, had 2 stories with a gorgon crossed with a blind love interest

  • Sirens are a second Greek mythological figure with similar stats

If you believe you have something outstandingly original that includes characters from the Greek pantheon, by all means send it through.

But we would like to take this moment to state again that there are many pantheons from which we are yet to see submissions, or pantheons from which we have only received a single submission. These include, though are not limited to:

  • Finnish

  • Hawaiian

  • Indian

  • Chinese

  • Palestinian

  • South African

For those of you with a specific interest in mythological women with magical hair, may I offer a short list of the following mythological creatures that we would be very interested in seeing stories about:

  1. Harionago (Japanese mythology)

  2. Rusalka (Slavic mythology)

  3. Cinnabar (Chinese mythology)

Please note that, should you or anyone you know be inspired to write for any such pantheons, we over at Scylla are likely to gasp in delight! We may even do a little dance. There will certainly be a lot of excited chatter over it!

Manuscript Wishlist:

I have still sadly yet to receive any submissions from the manuscript wishlist posted through our newsletter at the end of April, then reposted on Bluesky at the beginning of the month.

Otherwise, we’re happy to already report an abundance of variety in the submissions received! Mythologies from Egypt, Scotland, Haiti and East Asia – just to name a few – have seen themselves reimagined in our inbox, in addition to the expected and well-known stories of Greek mythology.

We’re excited as well to see that our submission call has already reached people from a wide variety of countries, such as Poland, Australia and New Zealand in addition, of course, to the USA.
