The Monstrous and the Divine: Second Month Round-Up

Just like that, we are now at only one month left to go in our submission window for The Monstrous and the Divine. Let me tell you, it’s been a blast!

This is the week we crested 100 submissions and the competition is getting fierce. I am delighted to say that the diversity of mythologies from across the world excites and astounds me as much as the talent that I’m getting the privilege to read.

Submission break down: We wrote and you listened!

After the last of these round-ups, we’ve been pleased to note a tangible downswing in submissions of assorted goddesses and mythologies from the Greek pantheon. This has given opportunities for mythologies from the following regions to flourish:

  • Japan

  • France

  • Scandinavia

  • Africa

We’ve even received one submission from Mesopotamia!

From my manuscript wishlist, I’m delighted to report receipt of several submissions that now fit this criteria! Stories bending and ignoring the established societal conventions remain some of my favourites and the social commentary we are getting in some of these reimagined myths is already making me excited to see this anthology out in the world.

In terms of LGBT+ intersectionality, we’ve seen some submissions with transgender sapphics, bisexual sapphics and asexual sapphics but none that yet weave in plural relationships that are certainly indicated in some myths to exist outside of monogamy between immortals. This last month before we close submissions and begin to compile our shortlist, I would most love to see any polyamorous content as well as new takes on “be careful what you wish for” narratives featuring djinn and other trickster myths.

If you have already submitted to us: Congratulations! We see you, we appreciate you, we have loved having the opportunity to read your stories and we look forward to getting back to you once some difficult decisions have been made.

If you are still to submit to us, thank you for trusting the team here at Scylla with your stories and for allowing this second submission call to inspire you creatively!
